POrtable Practices

In Lineage classes, we emphasize the power and importance of exploring different kinds of practices to find the ones that best serve you. Here are a few that we often share with young people and adults – and practice ourselves.

Breathing Practice: Deep Abdominal Breathing & Long Exhale with Chia-Ti Chiu

Both of these practices encourage us to breathe more deeply in and out of our lungs—helping us bring more oxygen into our bodies while creating a rhythmic connection to the breath. These practices can help us stay level-headed, grounded, and calm. You can use them when you are feeling tense or stressed out in order to promote relaxation in the nervous system. Breathwork may not feel supportive if you are feeling highly agitated or anxious. It is best to try and practice these techniques before you feel pushed to extremes.

Qigong is a gentle form of movement that invites a connection with the body and the elements in nature. The word “qi” in Chinese translates as “energy.” The movements of qigong can help optimize energy flow in the body. You can use this practice any time you feel like you need a little bit more balance or harmony in your life.

Anchor Meditation with Bart van Melik

Focusing on one thing helps the mind and body connect to the present moment, instead of thinking about the past or worrying about the future. With time, this practice can help you feel more in control of how you respond in various situations –rather than feeling reactive, like your emotions get the best of you.

Soothing Holds with April Frazier

Soothing holds practice can be a gentle way to care for yourself  in a stressful situation or if you feel disconnected from your body.

The heart that gives, gathers.

Lineage exists to break down the systematic barriers our students face in accessing NYC’s abundant wellness services. And right now, two years into this pandemic, one of the biggest barriers is money.

Publicly-funded programs for young people inside NYC systems have undergone severe budget cuts—making it even harder to bring trauma-sensitive mindfulness programs to our students.

We rely on fundraising from our community to make our work possible.
